For the Friars Preachers, the Gospel was not considered to be just any book. On the contrary, their officium sanctae praedicationis was born out of contemplation and the encounter with the Word of God that took place also – if not above all – in liturgical actions. Br. Dominik Jurczak’s study aims to explore this problem – from the ritual, structural, and textual point of view – starting from the liturgical texts used by the Preachers in the 13th century, and paying particular attention to the revision that took place about forty years after their foundation (1216), which was concluded under the guidance of Humbert of Romans, fifth Master of the Order, from 1254 to 1263. It is from this perspective that we present this edition of the evangelistarium and the incipit evangeliorum, whose texts have been handed down to us from Codex XIV L1, preserved in the General Archives of the Order of Preachers at the priory of Santa Sabina in Rome.

Brother Dominik Jurczak OP, former director of the Dominican Liturgical Centre in Kraków, is now president of the International Liturgical Commission of the Order. He teaches Sacred Liturgy at the Pontifical Institute of Liturgy at the Anselmianum and Dogmatic Theology at the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas Angelicum, also in Rome.
