Project description
The current inventory of the General Archives of the Order of Preachers (AGOP) was printed in 2002; it is the fourth edition of the 1930 Catalogus generalis compiled by Brother Angelus Walz, OP. Of the 21 existing series in the Archives, only a few are described in more detail (cf. Augustin Laffay, Pour une histoire des Archives de la curie généralice de l’Ordre des Prêcheurs, in Römische Quartalschrift 119/1-2 [2024], pp. 60-75).
The aim of the project is to describe the subseries containing archival records of the various provinces of the Order and the Dominican women’s monasteries in the German-speaking territories that have existed throughout history:
1) AGOP.XI – Conventus in particulari (Germania, Austria)
2) AGOP.XII – Monasteria et Congregationes Sororum (Germania, Austria, Helvetia)
3) AGOP.XIII – Provinciae (Teutonia, Provincia Germaniae Superioris et Austriae, Provincia Imperii, Provincia Austro-Hungarica, Congregatio Austriaca, Provincia Hungariae vel Vicariatus Generalis).
The description will facilitate orienting researchers to the respective series of the Archives in the future. In addition, there is a plan to publish an essay that will concisely present the documents preserved in the series. This project also aims to stimulate further research into the history of the friars and nuns of the Order of Preachers, especially in the region of the current Province of St. Albert in Austria and Germany and the Provincial Vicariate of Hungary.
