Mendicancies in Comparison: Mendicant Orders between Rule and Reality

The figure of the mendicant emerged during the late Middle Ages in response to specific social challenges. Since then, mendicant friars of different spiritualities have played a significant role in shaping the Church throughout history. However, their understanding of mendicancy have undergone profound changes over the centuries. A series of lectures, given by historians from various orders, offers an insight into the many values and encourages mutual exchange.

The lectures will be held from October 14, 2025, to May 12, 2026, at the Faculty of History and Cultural Heritage of the Pontifical Gregorian University, Piazza della Pilota, 4, Rome.
